Route: Leh – Skyu – Marka -Yurutse- Hankar – Nimaling – Base camp- Summit- Shang Sumdo – Leh
Our Markha Valley Trek and Kang Yatse expedition is one of the most Beautiful himalayan treks. Suitable for moderate levels of fitness, Markha Valley trek is an amazing opportunity to enjoy the serenity of the Himalayas whilst trekking through tiny villages and homes. Enjoy the lush green pastures of Nimaling and the views of ‘Kang Yatse’ peak whilst journeying on a voyage of self discovery. This is the best route to climb the peak as you acclimate properly before climbing.
Located in Hemis National Park, Kang Yatse II, at 6,250M, is the shorter of the two cousins with Kang Yatse I towering beside it at 6,400M. As one of the highest trekking peaks in the vast expanse of the arid terrain in Ladakh, Kang Yatse II makes itself seen on day 6 of our trek as we make our way to its base through Markha Valley. The peak is a thing of sheer beauty standing tall in the middle of this dry land of scree and loose rocks.
Drive is approximately 2 hours all along the zanskar river. After crossing the man-made wooden bridge you will pass a barren land to reach Chalak – a small village where you can take a short break and mingle with the local people. After your power break, you will use all your energy to charge through the river crossing before making your way to Markha village. Enjoy your Pack Lunch. Post Lunch you will make your way to Hankar village. You will get lost in your thoughts as you enjoy miles of barren pastures and wildlife spotting before reaching first the lower and then the upper Hankar villages for well earned rest and overnight camping.
Start your day with a light journey to Thachungtse where you can rest for a while before making your way to Nimaling (4900m above sea level). Along the way, you can spot blue sheep, goats and yaks grazing on the local flora and being herded by the nomadic tribes of Marka valley. As you approach your overnight campsite, you will catch views of Kang Yatse (6400m) – a popular Himalayan mountain known for its two main summits and knife-edge traverse. Overnight stay camping.
From the camp, start ascending up towards the base camp. The ascending is not tough and the camp is not too far and you are served hot lunch on your arrival. The base camp is in a small valley just before the peak. Overnight Camping.
Early in the morning at around 2:00 AM, we start ascending up to submit the peak. The ascending up is quite tough. Then as you reach the peak, you will surely enjoy the unimaginable views that surround the peak. You can see the deep Markha valley beneath, the Stok ranges, and the Zanskar ranges that become bold as they run towards Rubsho. Then descending down is not so easy and one should follow the instructions of the guide to avoid problems. It would be better to come down to Nimaling on the same day. Overnight camping.
